UA Local Union 72 welders and pipefitters have played a significant role in the Industrial History of the State of Georgia.
For well over a century the well trained Pipefitters, Welders and Apprentices of Local Union 72 have demonstrated their ability to deliver quality work and craftsmanship in the Industrial piping arena.
The Industrial landscape of Local Union 72's jurisdiction covers a wide range of work scope, from large electricity producing power plants, to paper mills, breweries, food and beverage manufacturers, pharmaceutical plants and research and development laboratories.
Local Union 72 members have been involved in the construction of numerous Southern Company/Georgia Power projects. With one of the largest being Plant Scherer in Juliette, GA. Plant Scherer is one of the largest steam plants in the world with an annual output of over three million kilowatts of electricity. The latest project is Plant McDonough-Atkinson in Smyrna, GA. McDonough-Atkinson is a three unit gas fired combined-cycle generating plant that can produce a combined total 2,500 megawatts of electricity making it one of Southern Companies largest producers. In the Power Industry UA members routinely use their skills in rigging, pipe and support welding and lay-out to fabricate and install piping,pumps, valves, instrumentation and other assorted equipment weighing up to hundreds of tons.
UA Local Union 72 members are actively engaged year round in the maintenance of numerous Georgia Power plants, working under a Powerhouse Maintenance Agreement. This agreement is crafted to take advantage of the skills of Local 72 members to enable GA Power to ensure its customers an ample supply of affordable electricity.
The food and beverage along with the pharmaceutical industry require a somewhat different set of skills. Both of these are covered by strict government guide lines for cleanliness, attention to detail and accurate record keeping. Along with standard industrial training, Local 72 offers a number of specialized classes to provide its members with the hard and soft skills needed for these ever changing areas.
UA Local 72 believes and takes pride in training its membership not only for today but also for the future. In this training, great emphasis is placed on craftsmanship, quality, safety, dependability and leadership. This type of training is one of the reasons many Local Union 72 members are found in leadership, quality control, planning and installation positions with companies from coast-to-coast and around the world.
